Animal Testing Outline
A.   Introduction
B.    Why animal testing takes place

2.     Research- only 6% is for medical research
C.    What Animals are tested?
1.     Specially bred and chemically altered animals
2.     Pound animals and random animals off the street
3.     People’s pets, stolen pets that are traded through a market
D.   What tests are done
1.     Eye Irritancy
2.     Acute toxicity
3.     Repeated dose toxicity
4.     Skin Corrosivity/Irritation
5.     Skin Sensitization
6.     Pharmacokinetics/Toxicokinetics and Metabolism
7.     Dermal Penetration
8.     Mutagenicity
9.     Carcinogenicity
10.  Reproductive and development toxicity
11.  Neurotoxicity
12.  Ecotoxicity
13.  Pyrogenicity
E.    Is it worth it
1.     Not that successful
a.     Human and animal testing agree only 5-25% of the time, according to Huntingdon Life Sciences
b.     Corneal transplants were delayed for 90 years and blood transfusions were delayed 200 years due to animal studies
c.     Less then 2% of human illnesses or 1.16% are ever seen in animals
d.     According to World Health Organization out of 200,000 released mediations only 240 are labeled as essential
2.     Actually slows down medicine and can be dangerous to us
a.     88% of stillbirths are due to drugs posed to be safe in animal testing
b.     Corneal transplants were delayed for 90 years and blood transfusions were delayed 200 years due to animal studies
3.     Animal experiments can be replaced by at least 450 methods known at this time
